"Classifying Solids"
Understanding Solids
- Solid: A solid occupies space and is not flat; it is a three-dimensional object.
Types of Solids
Prisms
Rectangular Prism:
- Bases are rectangles.
- Example: Box-shaped objects.
Cube:
- All faces are squares.
- Example: Dice.
Triangular Prism:
- Bases are triangles.
- Example: Roof shapes.
Pyramids
Rectangular Pyramid:
- Base is a rectangle.
- Example: A pyramid shaped like the base of a rectangular box.
Square Pyramid:
- Base is a square.
- Example: Classic pyramid shape found in Egypt.
Triangular Pyramid:
- Base is a triangle.
- Example: Tetrahedron, a four-faced solid.
Curved Solids
Cone:
- Base is a circle.
- Example: Ice cream cone.
Cylinder:
- Bases are circles.
- Example: A soda can.
Sphere:
- No bases, perfectly round.
- Example: A basketball.
Identifying Solids in Diagrams
Figures
- Figure A: Shows a rectangular prism.
- Figure B: Shows a square pyramid.
- Figure C: None of the figures shows a sphere.
Summary of Identification
- When classifying solids, look for the shape of the bases and the orientation of the faces. Prisms have flat bases, whereas pyramids have pointed tops; curved solids have bases that are circular, like cones and cylinders.
- Spheres are distinct as they have no edges or vertices, being perfectly round.
