Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering

Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering

  • Course led by Prof. Alex Grumezescu and assistants.

  • 50% of final grade from exam, 50% from lab.

Definition of Materials

  • Material: Substance or mixture of substances from which objects/products are made.

  • Types: Pure/impure, living/non-living matter.

Key Components of Materials Science and Engineering

  • Composition: Chemical make-up of materials.

  • Structure: Arrangement of atoms/ions.

  • Synthesis: Making materials from raw inputs.

  • Processing: Shaping and altering properties of materials.

  • Performance/Cost: Evaluating effectiveness and economic factors.

Classification of Materials

By State of Matter

  • Solid: Definite shape/volume, organized particle arrangement, specific melting point.

  • Liquid, Gas: Variability in shape and volume.

By Structure

  • Crystalline: Ordered atomic arrangement.

  • Amorphous: Non-crystalline, unordered structure (e.g., glass).

By Field of Use

  • Structural materials: Concrete, wood, steel.

  • Architectural materials: Glass, ceramics, wood.

  • Coating materials: Wood, metal sheets.

Mechanical Behavior of Materials

  • Elastic materials: Return to original shape after stress.

  • Plastic materials: Permanent deformation after stress.

Defects in Materials

Types of Defects

  • 0D Point Defects: Vacancies, interstitial atoms.

  • 1D Linear Defects: Edge and screw dislocations.

  • 2D Interfacial Defects: Grain boundaries, twin boundaries, phase boundaries.

  • 3D Bulk Defects: Pores, cracks formed during processing.
