editing techniques

editing, assembly, or montage

  • unique to moving image productions

  • editing should be used to create meaning, rather than just be used to compile footage into sequential order

  • the use of sound is also vital here for creating the uniqueness of cinematic montage over artforms such as photo-collage or comic books

dimensions of editing

  • graphic: aesthetic similarities — lighting, use of color, shapes, graphic matches, etc

  • rhythmic: length of shots, the building of rhythm, fast or slow, patterns of shot lengths, etc

  • spatial: editing to create space, or to link scenes, hcaracters, locations, the creating of relationships between people, places, or objects, etc

  • temporal: create chronology or non-linearity, expands the duration of a moment, or creates an ellipsis in time, etc

j cut

  • audio from the next scene begins before the previous scene has ended

  • viewer/audience senses and anticipates upcoming edit or change in scene/location/mood/tone

L cut

  • when the audio from the previous scene carries over into the next

  • allows the meaning, impact, and effect of the previous scene to linger into the next
