editing techniques
editing, assembly, or montage
unique to moving image productions
editing should be used to create meaning, rather than just be used to compile footage into sequential order
the use of sound is also vital here for creating the uniqueness of cinematic montage over artforms such as photo-collage or comic books
dimensions of editing
graphic: aesthetic similarities — lighting, use of color, shapes, graphic matches, etc
rhythmic: length of shots, the building of rhythm, fast or slow, patterns of shot lengths, etc
spatial: editing to create space, or to link scenes, hcaracters, locations, the creating of relationships between people, places, or objects, etc
temporal: create chronology or non-linearity, expands the duration of a moment, or creates an ellipsis in time, etc
j cut
audio from the next scene begins before the previous scene has ended
viewer/audience senses and anticipates upcoming edit or change in scene/location/mood/tone
L cut
when the audio from the previous scene carries over into the next
allows the meaning, impact, and effect of the previous scene to linger into the next
