Chapter 1: Going On Trip
Introduction
Jacob shares his story about a significant trip to Peru.
The decision to go almost didn't happen due to concerns about work and finances.
Trip Approval
The trip came up unexpectedly in October.
Jacob and Camille received quick approval from their commander for an out-of-country trip.
Travel Arrangements
Initially worried about costs but managed to cover plane tickets.
Tickets were purchased in October through a Colombian tour group.
Departed in January: Oklahoma → Miami → Lima → Cusco.
Acclimatization and Experience
Spent a couple of days in Cusco to acclimate to high altitude (17,000 feet).
Enjoyed local street food prior to starting a 45-mile hike to Machu Picchu over 4 days.
First Day of Hiking
Hiked for 12 hours on the first day.
Camped by a river in the Andes under a starry sky.
Chapter 2: Ruins Of Machu
Continuation of the Hike
The second day involved further hiking towards the jungle, where they stayed in a hostel.
Arriving at Machu Picchu
On the next day, Jacob and Camille hiked to Machu Picchu, arriving around 6 AM.
The ruins were initially shrouded in rain clouds but became visible as the clouds cleared half an hour later.
Exploration
Spent a few hours exploring the ruins and tombs.
Decided to hike up to Huayna Picchu, a 45-minute challenging hike.
The view from the top showcased Machu Picchu below and the surrounding Andes mountain range.
Reflection
After ascending, they took a train back to Cusco for a group meal with the tour group.
