• July 6, 1892- Jose Rizal was arrested and was exiled to Dapitan, three days after the establishment of La Liga Filipina.
JuIy 7, 1892- The Katipunan was established by Andres Bonifacio in Tondo, Manila, as a result of the failure of the Reform movement in Spain.

The Aims of the Katipunan
• Political- Separation from Spain
Moral- Good morals, good hygiene
Civic- Self Help and defense of the poor and the
oppressed
• To unite the Filipinos into one solid nation
- To fight for Philippine independence from Spain.
The Katipunan prepared the country for an
armed revolution to regain the country's lost
freedom.
KATIPUNAN MEMBERSHIP
• The KKK recruited new members by means of TRIANGLE SYSTEM
-An original member would recruit two new members who did not know each other.
Example: Bonifacio formed the first triangle with Diwa and Plata
They also agreed that they would pay a membership fee amounting to one real fuerte
(twenty-five centavos) and a monthly due of media real (twelve centavos)

Members are to recruit two new adherents, who would not know each other but only the original member who took him/her in.

• Ritual performed upon new recruits who wish to become members of the Katipunan
It usually starts with a trial and ends with Signing of an agreement, using their own blood.
Historical background of the Kartilya
Andres Bonifacio long wanted to have a codified document listing the duties and responsibilities of every member of the Katipunan. Incidentally, as Bonifacio was drafting the said document, Emilio Jacinto was writing one as well. By the time that Bonifacio was about to consult Jacinto for comments on his draft, the latter presented his work to the Supremo.
After seeing the draft of the Kartilya ng Katipunan by Emilio Jacinto, Bonifacio was impressed with Jacinto's style of writing and decided to adopt the Kartilya as the guidebook for the rules and regulations of Katipunan.
Emilio Jacinto
• Brains of the Katipunan
• Born in Trozo (Tondo), Manila on December 15, 1875.
His father died shortly after he was born so he was adopted by his uncle Don jose Dizon
• Obtained the Bachelor of Arts degree in Colegio de San Juan de Letran
• Studied law in UST but was not able to finish it
• He use the pen names Pingkian, Dimasilaw, and Ka Ilyong.
• He joined the Katipunan in 1894 and was the youngest member at 19 years old.
• Hes was the fiscal, secretary, editor, and later, general of the Katipunan.
He also became the director of the printing shop and
library of the Katipunan.
-The library contained written works on tactics and
weaponry, the French Revolution, and works of
demagogues.
He was also the editor of the newspaper Kalayaan
He died on April 16, 1899, at the age of 23 years old
because of Malaria
