Nuclear Energy Overview
Energy is contained in the nucleus of an atom.
Two primary methods for energy release:
Nuclear Fusion: Combining atoms to form a larger atom (e.g., Sun's energy).
Nuclear Fission: Splitting atoms into smaller atoms (used in nuclear power plants).
Nuclear Fission Process
Involves uranium or plutonium.
A neutron splits a uranium atom, releasing heat and radiation and more neutrons.
This initiates a chain reaction, allowing continuous energy release.
Importance of Nuclear Power
Increasing demand as fossil fuel reserves deplete.
Utilizes heat from fission instead of burning fuel.
Nuclear Reactor Types
Pressurized Water Reactor: Most common.
Boiling Water Reactor: Less common alternative.
