Body Systems
Skeletal System:
Organs: bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, joints, and marrow
Functions: movement, support, shape, protection, produces blood cells, stores and releases materials
Muscular System:
Organs: Muscles (Smooth Muscles: involuntary; muscle, movement, Cardiac Muscles: involuntary; (we don’t tell out heart to beat, it just does) found in heart, Skeletal Muscles: voluntary; muscles attached to the bones through connected tissues)
Functions: movement, support, protection, heat generation, blood circulation
Nervous System:
Organs:
CNS (Central Nervous System): brain, spinal cord, interneurons (passes info), controls body + mind
PNS (Peripheral Nervous System): nerves (bundles of neurons), sensory (gathers info), motor (send response and respond) [controls voluntary and involuntary reactions]
Functions: receiving info, responding to stimuli (info) maintaining homeostasis [regulating the body. ex: blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, body temp, digestion]
Circulatory:
Organs: Heart, blood vessels
Main Blood Vessels:
Blood: transports all materials (plasma, red and white blood cells, platelets)
Arteries: carries blood away from heart to capillaries
Capillaries, which is the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, and brings it to veins
Veins, which bring the blood back to the heart.
Functions: delivers oxygen + other nutrients, removes CO2 + other waste, regulates body temp., transports hormones, fights diseases
Respiratory:
Organs: lungs, larynx, trachea, bronchi, nose, alveoli, mouth
Functions: breathing, gas exchange (O2 and CO2), helps to smell, sound production, and filters particles (blood too)
