All Summer in a Day:

In this text, it has a lot of figurative language to show how the children think the sun looks like

for context, the children dont know what the sun looks like, with the story taking place on the planet venus

The children are excited to see the sun for the first time and experience it, but Margot was a girl who stood out from the rest

Margot used to live on earth, but moved to venus. She had experienced the sun before, but none of the other children believed her, or they were jealous of her.

When the sun was about to come through the rain, the children locked Margot into a supply closet.

When the sun came through, the chidren went out and experienced the joy of sunshine, but when they returned to the ground because it started raining again, they remembered that margot was still in the closet.

This story is a great representation that when youre jealous of somebody, taking action on them can make you feel guilty and have them miss out on things that they were really hoping to experience.

Characterization practice: “On the Rainy River”:

Elroy berdohl-

“he was just simply there, like the river and the late-summer sun. And yet by his presence, his mute watchfullness, he made it real.”

This shows that elroy has sort of a father;y vibe, while aling being comforting to tim in a way that doesnt require words. Even without saying a word to Tim, it feels as if he already knows that hes going through and is showing sympathy or empathy.

tim O’brien-

“I would go to the war- i would kill and maybe die- because i was embarrased not to. That was the sad thing. And so i sat in the bow of the boat and cried.”

First it is clear Tim is resistant and anxious with his decision. He struggles with what to do. He seems insecure because of his ultimate choice to give into societal pressure. he also seems honest and self-aware because he knows and admits to making the response.

Tims insecurity about making the choice he actually wants vs what people expect helps ilustrate to readers the common experience of caving tp the worlds pressure. He is an example of realizing that to not live with regret, we should at least try to live according to our own values.

recall events from the past:

  • They bring up Polynieces attack on thebes because brother conflict

  • tell about euridices and polynieces death

interpret and summarize events:

  • described polynieces as evil

  • fight corruption?

Antigone context: the story of oedipus

Oedipus was the son of the king and queen of thebes, but there was an oracle predicted that the son would kill his father, so they abandoned him as an infant.

a sheperd discovered the boy and took the child to corinth. the baby was then adopted by Polybus

Once Oedipus was an adult, he heard a phrophecy rhat he would kill his father and marry his mother.

With polybus being his adoptive father for so long, he thought that polybus was his real father.

Oedipus left the city to avoid killing what he believed was his father, but as he was traveling, he came across king Laius, his real father without realizing.

The two men fought one another, not recgonizing one another, and king laius died to oedipus

Then he arrived in thebes, and the city was under a curse of a sphinx. Creon said that he would give up being king to anyone who would save the city. Oedipus solved the riddle, and became king.

At the end, he realized he had fu mnifilled the prophecy that he most feared, and because he did it he blinded himself and turned over t=his power to creon.

Antigone - The main protaginist, trying to bury her brother when creon wont allow it, engaed to haemon

Ismene - sister of antigone, less of a leader, less confident, cares about polynieces but doesnt want to disobey the law.

Tiresias - blind wise man, prophet,

Creon - king of thebes, brother of jocasta, father of haemon

Jocasta - former queen of thebes, widow, was married to laius and oedipus

eteocles - son of jocasta and oedipus, died in the war against polynieces

Hamartia - the main piece of guilt in greek plays

Hubris -

oedipus - married his mother and killed his father, father to antigone, ismene, polynieces, eteocles, etc.

catharsis -

haemon - fiance to anitgone, son of creon, tries to have antigone not die

Polyneices - died, “disgrace” to thebes, went against his own kingdom

Letter from Birmingham jail:

In this letter, MLK Jr talks about how he was trying to fight for justice and equality, even if it was in another place.

The letter shows that sometimes civil disobiedence is okay, as long as its for a good cause.

it shows him explaining the process of organizing the protest

It is mostly him being calm while explaining how people need to learn to accept black people as equal
