Louis joliet & Jacques Marquette →French- 1670s traveled down the Mississippi river. Looking for NW passage got most of the way to the gulf of mexico then turned around
Robert cavelier de la salle→1682- Claimed the area for France- became Louisiana (Louis XIV). Still a huge French presence in Louisiana.
Jacques cartier→French- 1535- sailed up the St. Lawrence. Found an area that would become Montreal.

Spain- very Catholic- tried to invade England and stop Protestantism. The Spanish armada (132 ships, 30,000 troops) failed to take England. Bad weather and bad understanding of the currents of the English Channel.

Defeat of the armada in 1588 ended Spanish dominance in the old world. They turned their sites to continued expansion in the new world.

The biggest prize for any colonial power was to find the Northwest Passage, a direct water route through the Americas.
