Dermis

  1. Deep connective tissue that provides structural strength

  2. Consists of cells widely distributed in an extensive cellular matrix

  3. Cells include protein fibers, some adipocytes, fibroblasts, and macrophages

  4. Protein fibers include largely collagen, but also reticular and elastic

  5. Contains blood vessels for nutrient and waste exchange between the dermis and epidermis

  6. Contains nerve endings, hair follicles, smooth muscles, glands, and lymphatic vessels
