Topic 1.1: Geography, Map Scale, and Map Projections
Fundamentals of Geography
Geography: The study of spatial items, places, and physical assets, along with the features of their location. It examines the relationship between people, places, and items (dimensions), literally translating to the "study of earth".
Historiography: The science of writing history.
History: Spatial logic and the analysis of how things change over time and how things are.
Ancient Terms Focus: Spatial relationships and context.
Eratosthenes (): Recognized as the "Father of Geography".
Human Geography
Definition: One of the two major divisions of geography.
Core Focus: The spatial analysis of human populations, their cultures, activities, and landscapes.
Map Scale and Cartographic Scale
Cartographic Scale: The ratio of map size to actual location size on the Earth's surface.
Map Scale Ratios:
Scale and Detail Relationship:
Less detail = Small scale map
More detail = Larger scale map

Map Projections and Distortions
Map Projection: The method of portraying three-dimensional Earth locations onto a flat map.
Types of Distortion (Acronym: SADD):
Shape
Area
Distance
Direction
Major Distortion / Projection Types:
Mercator
Robinson
Peters
Planar
Goode Homolosine
Winkel Tripel

Map Scale and Cartographic Scale
Cartographic Scale: The ratio of map size to actual location size on the Earth's surface.
Map Scale Ratios:
Scale and Detail Relationship:
Small Scale Map: Uses a larger number or denominator (e.g., ); covers a large geographic area with less detail.
Large Scale Map: Uses a smaller number or denominator (e.g., ); covers a small geographic area with more detail.
Map Projections
Definition: The scientific and mathematical process of transferring locations from Earth's three-dimensional, spherical surface onto a two-dimensional flat map surface.
Distortion: Converting a 3D sphere to a 2D surface inevitably distorts spatial attributes such as shape, area, distance, or direction.
