Medical Terminology
Azotemia
- Definition: Presence of urea or other nitrogen-containing substances in the blood.
- Etymology:
- azot- = nitrogen
- -emia = condition of the blood
Cystocele
- Definition: Hernia of the urinary bladder.
- Etymology:
- cysto- = bladder
- -cele = hernia or rupture
Diabetic Kidney Disease
- Description: A disorder caused by diabetes mellitus.
- Effects:
- Damage to glomeruli
- Leakage of proteins into the urine
- Reduction in kidney's ability to remove water and waste
Dysuria
- Definition: Painful urination.
- Etymology:
- dys- = difficult or painful
- -uria = urine
Enuresis
- Definition: Involuntary voiding of urine after the age at which voluntary control has typically been attained.
- Etymology:
- en'-u-RE-sis = to void urine
Hydronephrosis
- Definition: Swelling of the kidney due to dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces.
- Causes:
- Obststructions in urine flow
- Could be due to:
- Congenital abnormalities
- Narrowing of the ureter
- Kidney stone
- Enlarged prostate
- Etymology:

- nephro- = kidney
- -osis = condition
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
- Definition: Radiograph (x-ray) of the kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder after venous injection of a radiopaque contrast medium.
- Etymology:
- intra- = within
- -veno- = vein
- pyelo- = renal pelvis
- -gram = record
