Medical Terminology

Azotemia

  • Definition: Presence of urea or other nitrogen-containing substances in the blood.
    • Etymology:
    • azot- = nitrogen
    • -emia = condition of the blood

Cystocele

  • Definition: Hernia of the urinary bladder.
    • Etymology:
    • cysto- = bladder
    • -cele = hernia or rupture

Diabetic Kidney Disease

  • Description: A disorder caused by diabetes mellitus.
    • Effects:
    • Damage to glomeruli
    • Leakage of proteins into the urine
    • Reduction in kidney's ability to remove water and waste

Dysuria

  • Definition: Painful urination.
    • Etymology:
    • dys- = difficult or painful
    • -uria = urine

Enuresis

  • Definition: Involuntary voiding of urine after the age at which voluntary control has typically been attained.
    • Etymology:
    • en'-u-RE-sis = to void urine

Hydronephrosis

  • Definition: Swelling of the kidney due to dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces.
    • Causes:
    • Obststructions in urine flow
    • Could be due to:
      • Congenital abnormalities
      • Narrowing of the ureter
      • Kidney stone
      • Enlarged prostate
    • Etymology:
    • hydro- = water
    • nephro- = kidney
    • -osis = condition

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

  • Definition: Radiograph (x-ray) of the kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder after venous injection of a radiopaque contrast medium.
    • Etymology:
    • intra- = within
    • -veno- = vein
    • pyelo- = renal pelvis
    • -gram = record
