The Alimentary System: Mechanism and Physiology of Digestion
- The alimentary system is a complex series of organs designed to process food, absorb nutrients, and expel waste.
- The total time allocated for the study of this unit is 12Hours.
- The process involves both mechanical digestion (physical breakdown of food) and chemical digestion (enzymatic breakdown of macromolecules).
Structure and Function of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract
- Mouth (Oral Cavity):
- This is the primary intake point for food.
- Function: Mechanical digestion occurs through mastication (chewing), while chemical digestion begins with the secretion of saliva containing amylase.
- Tongue:
- A muscular organ located on the floor of the mouth.
- Function: It assists in manipulating food for chewing and swallowing (deglutition). It contains taste buds (papillae) for gustatory sensation and aids in the formation of a food bolus.
- Teeth:
- Hard, calcified structures embedded in the jaws.
- Function: Mechanically breaking down food into smaller particles to increase the surface area for enzymatic action.
- Pharynx:
- A funnel-shaped tube that connects the oral cavity to the esophagus.
- Function: It serves as a common passageway for both air and food. During swallowing, the epiglottis closes the larynx to prevent food from entering the respiratory tract.
- Oesophagus:
- A muscular tube approximately 25cm in length.
- Function: It transports the food bolus from the pharynx to the stomach through rhythmic muscular contractions known as peristalsis.
Structure and Function of the Stomach and Intestines
- Stomach:
- A J-shaped muscular sac located between the esophagus and the small intestine.
- Function: It acts as a storage tank and a site for mechanical churning. It secretes gastric juices, including Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and pepsin, to begin the digestion of proteins and convert food into a semi-liquid state called chyme.
- Intestine:
- Small Intestine: Comprising the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. This is the primary site for the final chemical digestion and the absorption of nutrients through villi and microvilli.
- Large Intestine: Consisting of the cecum, colon, and rectum. Its primary function is the absorption of water and electrolytes from the remaining indigestible food matter and the formation of feces.
- Rectum:
- The final straight portion of the large intestine.
- Function: It serves as a temporary storage site for feces before elimination.
- Anus:
- The external opening at the end of the alimentary canal.
- Function: It controls the expulsion of feces through internal and external sphincters.
Digestive Glands and the Liver
- Digestive Glands:
- Includes salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual), gastric glands, the pancreas, and intestinal glands.
- Function: These glands secrete various enzymes and fluids (H2O, electrolytes, and mucus) essential for the chemical breakdown of food.
- Liver:
- Structure: The largest internal organ, divided into lobes and composed of functional units called lobules.
- Function:
- Production of bile, which is essential for the emulsification of lipids.
- Detoxification of metabolic waste and foreign substances.
- Storage of glucose in the form of glycogen.
- Synthesis of plasma proteins.
Physiology of Digestion and Absorption
- Carbohydrates:
- Digestion begins in the mouth (salivary amylase) and is completed in the small intestine (pancreatic amylase and disaccharidases).
- Mechanism: Polysaccharides → Disaccharides → Monosaccharides (e.g., glucose, fructose).
- Lipids (Fats):
- Primarily digested in the small intestine.
- Mechanism: Bile salts emulsify large fat globules. Pancreatic lipase then hydrolyzes triglycerides into fatty acids and monoglycerides.
- Proteins:
- Digestion starts in the stomach (pepsin) and continues in the small intestine (trypsin, chymotrypsin, and peptidases).
- Mechanism: Proteins → Polypeptides → Amino Acids.
The Urinary System: Structure and Function
- Main Parts: The system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, one urinary bladder, and one urethra.
- Structure and Function of the Kidney:
- The kidney is a bean-shaped organ located in the retroperitoneal space.
- Cortex: The outer layer where filtration occurs.
- Medulla: The inner region containing renal pyramids.
- Renal Pelvis: A funnel-like dilated proximal part of the ureter that collects urine.
- Function: Regulation of blood pressure, maintenance of acid-base balance, and removal of nitrogenous waste.
Structure of the Nephron
- The nephron is the structural and functional unit of the kidney, with approximately 1×106 nephrons per kidney.
- Renal Corpuscle:
- Glomerulus: A tuft of capillaries where blood filtration occurs.
- Bowman’s Capsule: A cup-like sac that receives the filtrate.
- Renal Tubules:
- Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT): Major site for reabsorption of water and solutes.
- Loop of Henle: Responsible for creating a concentration gradient in the medulla.
- Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT): Site for selective secretion and reabsorption.
- Collecting Duct: Final site for water reabsorption, regulated by Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH).
- Glomerular Filtration: Blood is filtered under pressure (HydrostaticPressure) in the glomerulus, allowing water and small solutes to pass into the capsule while retaining proteins and cells.
- Tubular Reabsorption: Essential substances (glucose, ions, water) are moved from the filtrate back into the peritubular capillaries.
- Tubular Secretion: Waste products (such as H+ and K+ ions) are actively transported from the blood into the tubules to be expelled.
- Urine:
- The final fluid produced after filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
- Composition: Water (≈95%), urea, creatinine, uric acid, and various electrolytes.
Additional Excretory Organs
- While the kidneys are the primary excretory organs, other organs contribute to the removal of metabolic waste:
- Lungs: Excretion of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and water vapor.
- Skin: Excretion of water, salts, and small amounts of urea through sweat glands.
