Explain Cable Type and Connectors

Personal Computers
  • Components of a Personal Computer (PC): Divided into two categories:
    • Peripheral Devices: User-handled devices (e.g., keyboard, mouse, microphone, camera) for input/output and external storage.
    • Internal Components: Housed in the system case/chassis, including:
    • Motherboard
    • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
    • System memory modules (RAM)
    • Adapter cards
    • Fixed disks
    • Power supply unit (PSU)
  • System Case/Chassis:
    • Most cases use a tower form factor, designed to stand vertically.
    • Can be placed on a desk or floor.
Opening a Desktop Computer’s Case
  • Maintenance Knowledge Required: Understanding how to open the case is essential for PC maintenance.
  • Tower Case Opening:
    • Side cover can be removed by sliding the panel from its housing, may be secured by screws or clips.
    • Front panel provides access to removable media drives, power on/off switch, and LEDs.
  • Rear Panel Access:
    • Accommodates PSU sockets and cutouts for I/O ports.
    • Uncovered slots can disrupt airflow and cause overheating.

Peripheral Devices

  • Input/Output (I/O) Port: Connects devices to the PC via peripheral cables.
  • Port Types:
    • Some ports are device-specific (e.g., graphics ports for monitors).
    • Others support various device types.
  • Placement of External Ports:
    • Found at the rear or front of the PC.
    • Can be located on the motherboard or as part of an expansion card.

Interfaces, Ports, and Connectors

  • Hardware Port: External connection point for a bus interface that transfers data.
  • Peripheral Cable Connectors: Inserted into ports with matching shapes/form factors.
  • Connector Design:
    • Most use edge contacts and keying features to prevent incorrect insertion.

Binary Data Storage and Transfer Units

  • Computer Processing: Utilizes binary data (1 or 0).
    • Bits and Bytes: Measurement units:
    • Bit (b) = 1
    • Byte (B) = 8 bits
  • Transfer Rates: Units:
    • Kilobits (Kb/s or Kbps) = 1000 bits
    • Megabits (Mb/s) = 1000 x 1000 bits
    • Gigabits (Gb/s) = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 bits
    • Kilobytes (KB/s) = 1000 Bytes
    • Megabytes (MB/s) = 1000 x 1000 Bytes
    • Gigabytes (GB/s) = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 Bytes

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cables

  • USB as Standard Connection:
    • Connects a majority of peripheral devices.
    • Managed by a host controller supporting multiple ports.
    • Theoretically, can connect up to 127 devices per controller; typically utilizes multiple controllers with 3 or 4 ports each on motherboards.
USB Standards
  • Multiple iterations of USB standard leading to higher data rates and new connector types.
USB Connector Types
  1. Type A:
    • For connection to host and some peripherals; rectangular shape.
  2. Type B:
    • Used for large devices (e.g., printers); square with beveled top.
  3. Type B Mini:
    • Small connector for early digital cameras, now mostly outdated.
  4. Type B Micro:
    • Modern connector for smaller devices (e.g., smartphones).
Cable Length and Power
  • Maximum USB cable length:
    • Low Speed: 3 m
    • Full Speed and High Speed: 5 m
  • Power supply features: USB can also charge connected devices.

HDMI and DisplayPort Video Cables

  • USB historically not used for video; specialized interfaces are required due to bandwidth demands.
  • Bandwidth Factors:
    • Image resolution (e.g., 1920x1200 for HD, 3840x2160 for 4K).
    • Refresh speed (measured in Hz or fps).
High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
  • Widely used in consumer electronics (e.g., TVs, monitors).
  • Supports video/audio, remote control, and HDCP protection.
  • Evolves to support high resolutions (4K, 8K) and features like frame rate matching.
DisplayPort Interface
  • Developed royalty-free by VESA, supporting similar features as HDMI.
  • Allows multiple monitors via daisy chaining.
  • Offers full-size and MiniDP connectors.
Thunderbolt and Lightning Cables
  • Thunderbolt:
    • Functions as a display interface (like HDMI) and general peripheral interface (like USB).
    • Versions 1 and 2 use MiniDP physical interface; support daisy chaining.
    • Up to 20 Gbps for version 2.
  • Lightning Connector:
    • Proprietary to Apple mobile devices; reversible.

SATA Hard Drive Cables

  • Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA):
    • Standard for connecting internal storage drives in PCs.
    • Supports speeds of up to 600 MBps (SATA revision 3).
  • Uses 7-pin connectors for data and separate 15-pin connectors for power.

Molex Power Connectors

  • Legacy Power Connection:
    • Used for older components; Molex connectors are usually white/clear and have 4 pins, color-coded for voltage.
External SATA Basics
  • eSATA Standard:
    • Allows peripheral drive attachments with a maximum cable length of 2 m; non-standard powered variants exist.

Motherboard Functions

Processing and Storage
  • All software data processed via binary code in CPU.
    • Storage provided through RAM (volatile) and mass storage devices (non-volatile).
System Clock and Bus Interfaces
  • Buses connect processing and storage components; the system clock synchronizes operations.
  • Clock Speeds:
    • Measured in MHz or GHz.
    • Clock multipliers adjust signals for varying bus speeds.

Motherboard Installation Procedures

General Installation Steps
  1. Refer to documentation for installation procedure.
  2. Use standoffs to secure the motherboard.
  3. Verify screw alignment; ensure stability without overtightening.
  4. Connect power, disk devices, and install add-on cards.
