Understanding Hospitality Facilities Planning and Ergonomics

CHAPTER 1: UNDERSTANDING HOSPITALITY FACILITIES PLANNING AND ERGONOMICS

AGENDA

  • At the end of the Chapter, the Students will be able to:
    1. Differentiate the concepts of facilities planning, layout, and design.
    2. Enumerate the different hospitality and tourism facilities.
    3. Describe Ergonomics and Human Comfort and its significance to Hospitality facilities planning.

CONTENTS

1. FACILITIES PLANNING
  • Definition: Facilities planning determines how the hospitality and tourism establishment's resources are best used to support the achievement of its goals and priorities.
  • Example: If the establishment’s goal is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for workers and guests, it will likely invest in high-quality materials for its facilities to support this objective.
  • Key Concepts: For effective facilities planning, considerations must include:
    • Facilities location
    • Facilities design
    • Facilities layout
2. FACILITIES LOCATION
  • Definition: Facilities location refers to the positioning of different facility elements in relation to the needs of employees, guests, suppliers, and other stakeholders, as well as the relationships between various facilities.
  • Importance: Priorities differ for each facility and its users; thus, thoughtful placement is crucial, as it also pertains to the facility’s positioning within the workplace or on a specific plot of land.
3. FACILITY DESIGN
  • Definition: Facility design is a specification that outlines the creation and structure of a facility.
  • Key Elements: a. LAYOUT: Refers to a plan that illustrates the organization and relationships among the parts of a specific facility. It includes details about:
    • Elements of the facility
    • Handling systems
      b. FACILITY SYSTEM: Encompasses structural, atmospheric, and operational systems prevalent in the facility. These can involve:
    • Physical features like interior/exterior design, lighting, sanitation and safety systems, gas, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), and water utilities.
      c. HANDLING SYSTEM: Comprises the elements necessary for facility interactions, including:
    • Front-of-the-house employees who engage with guests.
    • Back-of-the-house employees necessary for service delivery.
4. SYSTEM ANALYSIS
  • Definition: System analysis is a discipline focusing on the structure and roles of work systems designed to streamline processes, including work environments and facilities.
  • Relevance: This study is essential for understanding human comfort and ergonomics.
5. HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS (HFE)
  • Definition: HFE is a discipline that examines the relationship between people, technology, and the factors affecting this relationship.
  • Application: In the tourism and hospitality industry, this relationship is often observed within workplace settings aimed at maximizing comfort and productivity for both employees and guests, including other stakeholders.

IMPORTANCE OF FACILITIES PLANNING AND HFE

  • Facilities planning and HFE are:
    • Continuous priorities and activities.
    • Capable of making work processes easier, enhancing efficiency, and optimizing operational systems.
    • Instrumental in increasing productivity while reducing costs.
    • Preventive of wastes such as fines and lawsuits, thereby promoting legal compliance.
    • Supportive of sustainability initiatives.
    • Pivotal in minimizing losses and attaining optimum profitability through effective materials handling, process flow management, and physical design.

OBJECTIVES OF FACILITY PLANNING

  1. To support the company’s overall vision.
  2. To utilize resources effectively, including manpower, tools, workspace, and energy.
  3. To reduce principal funds expenditure.
  4. To ensure flexibility, ease of maintenance, and supervision.
  5. To enhance manpower safety, security, and job satisfaction.

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM FACILITIES

  • Types of facilities in hospitality and tourism include:
    1. Hotel
    2. Resort
    3. Tourism Enterprises
    4. Restaurant
    5. Department Store
    6. Shop
    7. Sports and Recreational Facilities
    8. Museums
    9. Training Center
