Social Influence
When an individual's attitudes, beliefs, and behavior are modified by the presence or actions of others.
Informational Social Influence
Changing one's opinion or behavior to align with others because you believe they have accurate information and the goal is to be accurate.
Private Acceptance
Enduring, internalized change in attitude or belief as a result of informational social influence.
Normative Social Influence
Expressing opinions or behaving in ways that will lead to acceptance by a group or to avoid rejection.
Public Compliance
Superficial change in behavior without a change in underlying attitude as a result of normative social influence.
Majority Influence
When the beliefs of the larger number of individuals in a group (the majority) prevail.
Minority Influence
When the beliefs of a smaller number of individuals in a group prevail.
Autokinetic Effect
Perceptual illusion that a stationary pinpoint of light in a dark room appears to move.
Factors that help minorities influence majorities (Moscovici)
Consistency over time and with other minorities, personal and material sacrifice, acting in line with principles, and absolute consistency within the key topic of influence.
Unanimity
The degree to which people all agree. Lack of this decreases social influence.
