Listening
The active process of making meaning out of another person’s spoken message.
Hearing
The sensory process of receiving and perceiving sounds.
Attentional Biases
A tendency to focus on specific messages while ignoring others.
Information Overload
When you are exposed to many messages at once, making it difficult to attend to everything.
Selective Attention
Listening only to the information that we find relevant.
Rebuttal Tendency
Debating a speaker’s point and formulating a reply while the speaker is still talking.
Closed-mindedness
The tendency not to listen to information that conflicts with one's own beliefs.
Pseudolistening
Pretending to pay attention to someone while actually being distracted.
Informational Listening
Listening to learn or understand, such as during a lecture or when given directions.
Critical Listening
Listening to evaluate or analyze a speaker's argument.
Empathic Listening
Listening to understand and acknowledge another person’s feelings.
HURIER Model
A model of effective listening that includes Hearing, Understanding, Remembering, Interpreting, Evaluating, and Responding.
Active Listening
Engaging fully with the speaker and demonstrating understanding, as opposed to passive listening.
Barriers to Listening
Obstacles that hinder effective listening, such as noise, emotional involvement, and biases.
Confirmation Bias
The tendency to favor information that confirms one's existing beliefs.
Evaluation of Speaker Credibility
Assessing the trustworthiness and expertise of the speaker.
Nonverbal Communication of Support
Using body language and other nonverbal cues to show understanding and empathy.
