Physical Disabilities
Severe orthopedic impairment that
adversely affects a student's
educational performance, includes
impairments resulting from a
congenital impairment caused by
disease other causes such as
cerebral palsy and spina bifida
Other health impairments
Having limited strength, vitality,
or alertness, including a
heightened alertness to
environmental stimuli, that results
in limited alertness with respect to
the educational environment that
1. Is due to chronic or acute health
problems like epilepsy and asthma,
2.affects a child's performance
Cerebrsl Palsy
refers to a group of neurological impairments that affect movement and posture and occur before birth or during infancy
Other health impairments accompanying cerebral palsy
● Higher risk of
seizures (20-30%)
● Difficulty swallowing
● Visual Impairments
● Higher risk for
aspiration pneumonia
● High levels of reflux
diseases
Spastic Cerebral palsy
tightness in one or more muscle group and affects approximately 78% of people with CP
Dyskinetic CP
Impairments in muscle
tone affecting the
whole body
Athetoid CP
Involves abrupt
involuntary movements of
the head, neck, face and
extremities
Ataxic CP
Involves unsteadiness, lack
of coordination and balance
and varying degrees of
difficulty with standing and
walking
Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida is a before
birth condition that is
a malformation of the
spinal cord or in other
words an “open spine”.
Spina bifida occulta
The opening of one or more
bones in the spinal
column. This is the
mildest and there is no
damag
meningocele
overing of the spinal
cord, caused by a defect
in the spine and can be
repaired through surgery,
although it is more severe
myelomeningocele
The spinal cord's covering and
portions of the spine/nerve
roots form(protrudes) a sac
through an opening. Alterations
can result in brain
development, and can lead to
physical/cognitive impairment.
This form is the most serious.
Epilepsy
Condition characterized by recurrent and
unprovoked seizures, which temporary
neurological abnormalities as a result from
unregulated electrical discharges in the
brain
Partial Siezure
Begins on one side of the cerebral hemisphere
generalized siezure
involves both of the cerebral hemispheres
tonic- clonic siezures
go back and forth through rigid extremities
abesent siezures
lose consciousness for brief periods of time lasting about 10 seconds
genetic factors of siezures
passed down from family members
-certain disorders are associated
with onset epilepsy
enviromental factors of epilepsy
certain nutritional or dietetic
factors that result of vitamin
deficiencies
asthma
chronic lung condition characterized by airway construnction inflamation, and hyper irritability of the bronchial tubes
intermitten asthma
asthma attacks that happen 3 or fewer days per week or days per month
mild persistent asthma
astham attacks 2 or more days per week, 3-4 nights per month
moderate persistent
daily asthma attacks, more than one night a week
severe persistent
continual asthma attacks that interfere with physical activity
