Triple Entente

Great Britain, France, and Russia.

Triple Alliance

Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

Trench Warfare

A type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other.

No Man's Land

Area between opposing trenches, where most fighting took place.

Stalemate

Inability for either side to win

Machine Guns

New weapon of World War 1 that could fire 400 to 600 rounds per minute.

Poison Gas

Weapon used in artillery shells that caused asphyxiation or internal and external bleeding.

Tanks

Developed by the British to end the stalemate; could cause heavy damage to enemy lines.

Lusitania

British cruise ship sunk by Germany in 1915, killing over 1,200 people, including 128 Americans.

Zimmerman Telegram

Telegram from Germany to Mexico proposing an alliance against the U.S.
