Active Transport
Movement of materials into or out of a cell using the cell’s energy (ATP).
Passive Transport
Movement of materials across the cell membrane without using energy.
Cell Membrane
A thin, flexible layer that surrounds a cell; it controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Hypertonic Solution
A solution with more solute outside the cell than inside, causing water to move out and the cell to shrink.
Hypotonic Solution
A solution with less solute outside the cell than inside, causing water to move in and the cell to swell or burst.
Isotonic Solution
A solution with the same amount of solute inside and outside the cell, resulting in no change in cell size.
Solution
A mixture of two or more things where one thing dissolves in another.
Diffusion
The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis
A special kind of diffusion where water moves through a semi-permeable membrane.
Semi-permeable (Selectively Permeable)
A property of a membrane that allows only certain things to pass through.
Homeostasis
The ability of an organism or cell to maintain a balanced internal environment despite changes outside.
