STEP 2: Problem Statement

Context: Rapid urbanization in Cape Town has reduced access to green spaces in many communities. Dense buildings, traffic, noise, and pollution contribute to stress and mental health challenges among residents.

Evidence: Previous studies show that green spaces can help reduce stress, improve mood, and encourage social interaction in urban environments.

Gaps: However, there is limited research on how the lack of green spaces specifically affects mental wellbeing in highly urbanized areas of Cape Town.

Focus: This study investigates the impact of green spaces on urban stress and mental wellbeing in Cape Town.

STEP 3: Goal and Objectives

The goal of this research is to examine how green spaces can reduce urban stress and improve mental wellbeing in Cape Town. The study aims to understand the relationship between urban environments and mental health. It also seeks to identify the social and environmental benefits of green infrastructure in cities. The research will provide recommendations for improving access to green spaces in urban communities.

Objectives:

  • To investigate the impact of limited green spaces on mental health in urban areas.

STEP 4: Research Question & Methodology

The main research question for this study is: How can green spaces help reduce urban stress and improve mental wellbeing in Cape Town?

The study will use quantitative methods through questionnaire surveys and qualitative methods through interviews, narrative inquiry, and case study analysis. Information will be collected from books, academic articles, urban planning reports, and case studies related to urban stress and green infrastructure. A questionnaire survey and narrative inquiry approach will also be used to collect information from residents about their experiences with green spaces and mental wellbeing.

The research process will begin with a literature review followed by case study analysis. Survey responses and personal experiences will then be collected and analyzed to identify the relationship between urban green spaces and mental health. The findings will be used to suggest ways to improve green infrastructure in Cape Town.
