Messiah

Hebrew Word for “anointed one” and the title given to the Savior God promised the people of Israel

Kingdom Of God

God’s reign or rule over all things. Jesus proclaimed that it was at hand. The Church is the seed of the Kingdom here on earth

The 12 men Jesus chose and are endowed with special authority as the first Bishops of His church

Bishops

The successors to the apostles who have received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders

Priests

The collaborators of the Bishops: serve in the person of Christ the head

Deacons

Men ordained not for priesthood but for ministry and service as assistants to Bishops and Priests: ministry of the Word, divine Worship, pastoral governance and the service of charity

Ecumenical Council

A formal gathering of all of the world’s Bishops called by the Pope in order to address issues of importance to the church

Apostolic Succession

The handing on of apostolic preaching and authority from the apostles to their successors, the bishops, through the laying of the hands, as a permanent office in the church

Gospels

The first 4 books in the New Testament. Proclaim the good news of salvation won by the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ

Transubstantiation

The word used to describe the changing of Bread and Wine during Mass into the Body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ

Sacred Tradition

The living transmission of the Gospel message in the church

Sacred Scripture

The written record of God’s revelation of Himself contained in the Old and New Testament: Composed by writers inspired by the Holy Spirit

The teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church

Atheist

The belief that God doesn’t exist

Protestant

A member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church

Bride of Christ

Title for the church that reflects how her bridegroom Jesus gave himself up for her

Israel

Hebrew word for “He who strives with God”. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, God named the chosen people of Israel

A call from God to a permanent state of life: priesthood, religious orders or marriage

A small remaining amount. In the Old Testament, only a few Jews returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian Exile

Period of forced activity of the Jews in Babylon following that civilizations conquest of the Kingdom of Judah

A spiritual Journey to a religious destination, often physically challenging and typically undertaken to grow in holiness or as a penance
