Transpiration
The loss of water vapor from a plant, primarily through stomatal pores in the leaves.
Stomata
Pores located on the underside of leaves that facilitate gas exchange.
Mass Flow
The movement of a fluid along a pressure gradient; in plants, it refers to the flow of water through xylem vessels from roots to leaves.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration.
Evaporation
The process by which water is converted from a liquid state to a vapor.
Capillary Action
The ability of water to flow in narrow spaces against gravity, facilitating water movement in xylem vessels.
Aquaporins
Channel proteins in root cell membranes that facilitate the transport of water.
Guard Cells
Specialized cells that flank stomata and regulate their opening and closing to control gas exchange and water loss.
Cohesion
The attraction between water molecules, primarily due to hydrogen bonding.
Adhesion
The attraction between water molecules and the surfaces of xylem walls.
