New moon
A new moon cycle/phase has started

Waxing Cresent
A small sliver of light is visible on the right side, and the illuminated portion is growing.

First Quarter
The right half of the moon is illuminated, forming a half-circle.

Waxing Gibbous
More than half of the moon is lit, and the illuminated portion continues to grow.

Full moon
The entire face of the moon is illuminated by the sun.

Waning Gibbous
The moon is still more than half lit, but the illuminated portion is shrinking

Last Quarter
The left half of the moon is illuminated (opposite of the first quarter), and the illuminated portion is shrinking.

Waning Crescent
A sliver of light remains on the left side, and the illuminated portion continues to shrink until the new moon.
