Considering a president had never died in office, the procedures to follow were unprecedented. Once William Henry Harrison deceased, it was known that his VP, John Tyler were to become president because Article II, section 1, paragraph 6 says that if the president is removed from office the powers and duties of the president devolve to the VP. What was not known, however, was to what capacity Tyler would become president. As in, would he simply act as president (merely executing presidential powers), or would he fully assume the powers and duties of a president.
