Lower Limb Bones (Proximal to Distal)
The sequence of bones starting from the top: Hip bone, Femur, Patella, Tibia, Fibula, Tarsal bones, Metatarsal bones, and Phalanges.
Hip Bone Composition
The union of three bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
Acetabulum
A socket on the lateral view of the hip bone where the head of the femur articulates.
Obturator foramen
The large opening created by the ischium and pubis bones of the pelvis.
Auricular surface
An ear-shaped surface reachable on the medial view of the hip bone for articulation with the sacrum.
Fovea of head
A small pit in the head of the femur that serves as an attachment point for the ligamentum teres.
Intertrochanteric line
A ridge located on the anterior surface of the proximal femur between the greater and lesser trochanters.
Intertrochanteric crest
A prominent ridge located on the posterior surface of the proximal femur connecting the two trochanters.
Gluteal tuberosity
A rough area on the posterior surface of the proximal femur for muscle attachment.
Pelvic girdle
The structure connecting the lower limbs to the trunk, consisting of two hip bones, the sacrum, and the coccyx.
Sacroiliac joints
Posterior joints that are partly fibrous (interosseous ligaments) and partly synovial (L-shaped articular surfaces) which interlock to restrict motion.
Pubic symphysis
An anterior cartilaginous joint united by a fibrocartilage disc and supported by superior and inferior pubic ligaments.
Hip joint (Acetabulofemoral joint)
A synovial ball-and-socket joint that allows motion in all three anatomical planes.
Ligamentum teres
Short for the ligament of the head of the femur, it is an intracapsular ligament located within the hip joint.
Acetabular labrum
A ring of fibrocartilage that deepens the acetabulum to improve joint stability.
Anterior Extracapsular Ligaments
The iliofemoral ligament and the pubofemoral ligament.
Posterior Extracapsular Ligament
The ischiofemoral ligament.
Sagittal plane motion
Hip motions consisting of flexion and extension.
Frontal plane motion
Hip motions consisting of abduction and adduction.
Transverse plane motion
Hip motions consisting of medial and lateral rotation.
