F.W. de Klerk

CODESA
The Convention for a Democratic South Africa, which began on 20 December 1991 to negotiate a new constitution and democratic elections.
Boipatong massacre
A violent incident in June 1992 where approximately 40 ANC supporters were killed by IFP supporters, causing a temporary breakdown in talks.
Chris Hani
The political leader whose assassination on 10 April 1993 brought the nation to the brink of civil war and led to calls for calm by Nelson Mandela.
Goldstone Commission
A commission established in 1991 to investigate political violence, which found that security forces had contributed to the unrest.
Record of Understanding
An agreement signed between the ANC and the NP that helped restore communication and allowed formal negotiations to resume after deadlock.
Joe Slovo
The leader who proposed the Sunset Clause as a way to facilitate a peaceful transition to democracy through power-sharing.
Sunset Clause
A compromise suggesting the formation of a temporary Government of National Unity and the protection of civil servants during the transition.
MPNC
The Multi-party Negotiation Council, consisting of 26 parties that met in March 1993 to draft a democratic constitution and set an election date.
COSAG
The Concerned South Africans Group, formed by the IFP, Ciskei, and Bophuthatswana after they withdrew from the Multi-party negotiations.
Transitional Executive Council (TEC)
An organization established to ensure a fair political climate and oversee preparations for the first democratic elections.
