Research
A systematic investigation (gathering and analysis of information) designed to develop or contribute to generalisable knowledge.
Systematic Investigation (in research)
A cyclical process involving hypothesis formation, method design, data collection and analysis, summarization of results, and sharing conclusions to add to existing knowledge.
Purpose of Research
To discover new knowledge, further understand the world, apply knowledge to better everyday life, and identify what is known, unknown, and can be developed.
Research Proposal
A detailed document written by a researcher outlining the proposed program, intended to persuade funders, outline planned activities, and emphasize the contribution to the field.
Purpose of a Research Proposal (for candidates)
To ensure candidates have done sufficient preliminary reading/research in their area of interest and have thoroughly considered the issues involved.
Solicited Proposal
A type of research proposal submitted in response to a specific solicitation (e.g., Request for Proposals - RFP) issued by a sponsor, usually with specific requirements.
Unsolicited Proposal
A type of research proposal submitted to a sponsor that has not issued a specific solicitation, based on the investigator's belief in the sponsor's interest in the subject.
Pre-proposal
A brief submission (e.g., letter of intent, abstract, or concept paper) requested by a sponsor to minimize applicant effort and determine if a full proposal is warranted.
Continuation Proposal
A type of research proposal requesting the next year's funding within a multi-year grant, typically including a progress report, budget, and other relevant materials.
Renewal Proposal
A type of research proposal requesting continued support for an existing project that is about to terminate, similar to new proposals but focused on demonstrating continued value.
