Prosocial Behavior
Actions intended to benefit others, such as helping or sharing.
Sociobiology
Theory suggesting that people help others primarily to enhance their own reproductive success.
Reciprocity Norm
Expectation that people will respond favorably to each other's altruistic actions.
Social Responsibility Norm
Expectation that people will help those dependent upon them.
Empathy
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Donor Fatigue
A decrease in willingness to help due to repeated requests or failures to achieve desired emotions.
Bystander Effect
The tendency for individuals to be less likely to help in an emergency when others are present.
Diffusion of Responsibility
The phenomenon where each bystander assumes someone else will take responsibility for helping.
Social Learning Theory
Theory that behavior is learned through observing and imitating others.
Catharsis
The release of emotional tension; often incorrectly believed to reduce aggression.
Frustration-Aggression Hypothesis
The theory that frustration leads to aggression.
Deindividuation
A psychological state characterized by a loss of self-awareness and individual accountability in groups.
Social Dilemma
A situation where individual self-interest conflicts with the collective interest.
Free Riding
Benefiting from a resource without contributing to its upkeep.
Sucker Effect
The tendency to avoid cooperating because you don't want to be exploited by others.
Public Good Dilemma
A situation where individuals must decide how much to contribute to a resource that everyone can use.
Egotistic People
Individuals who act in their own self-interest and prioritize immediate rewards.
Situational Influences
External factors that impact behavior and decision-making.
Superordinate Goals
Shared goals that necessitate cooperation to achieve.
Ingroup Bias
The tendency to favor one's own group over others.
