DSM-5-TR categories of OCD
OCD - characterised by either obsessions (recurring thoughts) or compulsion (repetitive behaviours like handwashing). Most have both obsessions and compulsions.
Trichotillomania - compulsive hair-pulling
Hoarding disorder - the compulsive gathering of possessions and the inability to part with anything, regardless of its value
Excoriation disorder - compulsive skin-picking
Behavioural characteristics of OCD
Compulsions are repetitive - feel compelled to repeat a behaviour like handwashing
Compulsions reduce anxiety - irrational anxiety
Avoidance - keep away from situations to reduce anxiety
Emotional characteristics of OCD
Anxiety and distress - Obsessive thoughts can be unpleasant and frightening
Accompanying depression - OCD is often accompanied by depression, so anxiety can be accompanied by low mood. Compulsive behaviour tends to bring some relief from anxiety but this is temporary
