Unit Fraction
A fraction where the numerator is 1, such as 91, 41, 31, 51, or 21.
Mixed Number
A number consisting of a whole number combined with a fraction, such as 354 or 721.
Multiplication as Scaling
The process of resizing a quantity by a factor, represented in the study guide using the symbols >, <, and =.
Area of a Rectangle
The measure of the size of a rectangular surface, covered in Lesson 8-6.
Quotient
The result of a division expression, which can be represented as a fraction (e.g., 5÷9=95) or a mixed number (e.g., 7÷5=152).
Line Plot
A graph used to analyze data frequencies, such as recording bowling shoe sizes, pearl sizes, or rock sample weights in ounces.
Rectangular Prism
A three-dimensional solid shape, such as a garage or a sand box, for which volume can be calculated.
Volume
The amount of space a solid occupies, modeled in Lesson 11-1 and calculated using formulas in Lesson 11-2.
Customary Units of Length
Units used to measure distance in the customary system, including inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi).
Customary Units of Capacity
Units used to measure liquid volume in the customary system, including fluid ounces (floz), cups (c), pints (pt), quarts (qt), and gallons (gal).
Customary Units of Weight
Units used to measure how heavy an object is in the customary system, including ounces (oz), pounds (lb), and tons (T).
Metric Units of Length
Units based on the meter used to measure distance, including millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), and kilometers (km).
Metric Units of Capacity
Units used to measure liquid volume in the metric system, specifically milliliters (mL) and liters (L).
Metric Units of Mass
Units used to measure matter in the metric system, including milligrams (mg), grams (g), and kilograms (kg).
Units of Time
Units used to measure duration, including seconds, minutes (min), and hours (hr).
Numerical Expression
A mathematical phrase containing numbers and operations, such as 15−1+(6÷2).
Evaluate
To find the value of a numerical expression by performing the operations in the correct order.
Coordinate System
A system used to locate points on a grid using ordered pairs (x,y).
Ordered Pair
A pair of numbers used to identify a specific point on a coordinate grid, such as (2,1) or (7,6).
Numerical Pattern
A sequence of numbers that follows a specific rule, such as "add 15", "add 8", "add 6", or "add 2".
Quadrilateral
A four-sided polygon, including specific types such as trapezoids, parallelograms, rectangles, and squares.
Parallelogram
A quadrilateral that includes squares as special cases; however, not all trapezoids are parallelograms.
