Figure-ground
Brain's tendency to separate the visual field into a figure (with shape, contour, and meaning) and a background (which has no shape or contour and appears behind the figure).
Closure
Brain's tendency to mentally join, fill in, or ignore gaps in incomplete stimuli to perceive a whole form.
Proximity
Brain's tendency to group parts of visual stimuli that are close to each other as belonging together.
Similarity
Brain's tendency to group objects with similar features (such as size, shape, or color) as belonging together.
