Enthalpy Change of Combustion (ΔcH):

the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a substance is completely combusted

2
New cards

Enthalpy Change of Formation (ΔfH)

Is the enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is produced from its elements in their standard states under standard conditions.

3
New cards

Enthalpy Change of Neutralisation (ΔneutH):

the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of water is formed from a neutralisation reaction

4
New cards

Enthalpy Change of Reaction (ΔrH)

the enthalpy change that is associated with a particular chemical equation.

5
New cards

State the enthalpy change of neutralisation for strong and weak acids. State why these are the case. (2)

  • Strong acids: -57kJ/mol because all fully dissociated

  • Weak acids: <57kJ/mol because only partly dissociated

6
New cards

State the procedure for calorimetry.

  • Allow equal vol and conc of acid and alkali to reach same temperature in separate containers

  • Measure temp of acid and alkali (should be same)

  • Place in polystyrene cup with lid to minimise heat loss

  • Measure maximum temperature reached.

7
New cards

Why may experimental values differ from data values in calorimetry? Give 3 reasons. (3)

  • Heat loss to surroundings

  • Experiment not carried out under standard conditions (25 degrees, 1 atm)

  • SHC of cup not taken into account
