What does HADS stand for?
the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale
How is the HADS scored?
4 point scale (0-3)
higher scores = high depression/anxiety
anxiety and depression scored separately
range for each subscale = 0-21
How do you interpret the scores for the HADS?
0-7 = normal
8-10 = elevated distress
11-14 = abnormal
15-21 = severe distress
When is the HADS used?
screening for symptoms of depression/anxiety (but not a formal diagnosis measure)
monitoring progress of treatment in clinical practice
treatment effectiveness studies
What are some psychometric properties of the HADS?
Clover et al., = HADS had goof diagnostic accuracy
Wu et al., = lower cutoff levels for lower end of scale to reduce false negatives and higher cutoffs at higher end of scale to reduce false positives
