electronegativity
more to the right and up the periodic table means the greater the electronegativity.
Ionic Bond
The transferring of electrons (metals and nonmetals together)
Covalent Bonds
the sharing of electrons ( nonmetal to nonmetal)
Nonpolar
electrons shared properly
Polar
electrons being shared unequally
Metallic Bond
A bond that holds electrons together through a “sea” if delocalized electrons and positive charged metal ions
How to determine the bond polarity
use the difference in electronegativity values.
larger value - smaller value = the electronegativity of bond
partial changes
the atom with the bigger electronegative value will have a partial negative charged (S-)
the atom with a smaller electronegative value will have a partial positive charge (S+)
Dipole arrow
they point towards the atom that has a more negative charge (S-)
