What is a reducing sugar?
A carbohydrate that contains a free aldehyde or ketone group which allows it to act as a reducing agent by donating electrons to another molecule. It undergoes oxidation itself.
What type of sugars are monosaccharides?
Examples?
Reducing sugars
Glucose, fructose, ribose and maltose.
Nonreducing sugar examples?
Sucrose, trehalose
Protein test?
40 drops of sample
3 drops of biuret reagent
Gently shake
+ve result is purple solution
What are mucopolysaccharides?
Group of inherited metabolic diseases caused by the absence of enzymes needed to break down glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
Which process is responsible for the breakdown of protein into their constituent monomers (amino acids)?
Hydrolysis
Which functional group is described as nonpolar and important for interacting with other nonpolar molecules.
Alkyl (—CH2)
What are the 3 components of an amino acid general structure?
An amino group
A carboxyl group
A side chain (R group)
The general chemical formula for a carbohydrate molecule?
(CH2O)n
what functional group is involved in cellular energy transfer?
the phosphate group
