Frontal bone
Tags & Description
Frontal bone
front part of skull (forehead)
supraorbital foramen
tiny hole above orbit (eye socket)
Coronal suture
joint at top of the skull; between frontal and parietal bone behind
Frontal sinus
transverse section; big open space
Parietal bone
2; behind frontal bone; coronal suture fuses them to the frontal bone
Sagittal suture
fuses parietal bones; on top of skull
Temporal bone
lateral side of the head; below parietal bone
Squamosal suture
joint between temporal and parietal bone; fuses them together
Zygomatic process
skinny, horizontal, going towards cheek
mandibular (glenoid) fossa
(inferior view) round-shaped depression, base of zygomatic process
external auditory (acoustic) meatus (canal)
hole behind zygomatic process
Styloid process
pointy, skinny projection, below acoustic canal
Mastoid process
posterior to styloid process; wide, not pointy; little nub
Carotid canal (carotid foramen)
(inferior view) round, hole, medial to styloid process
Jugular foramen
medial to styloid process; bigger, elongated, posterior to carotid canal
Sphenoid bone
bat/butterfly looking
Greater wing of the sphenoid bone
on each side of the Sella turcica (foramen in greater wing)
Lesser wing of the sphenoid bone
anterior to greater wingers, superior to greater wings (no foramen)
Orbital surface (orbital place)
posterior portion of eye-socket
Foramen ovale
oval shaped hole; in greater wing
Foramen spinosum
smaller, posterior to ovale, hole in greater wing
Optic foramen
underneath lesser wings, hole leads to orbital
Sphenoid sinus
cavity (disarticulated- eyes of bat/butterfly)
Sella turcica
depression in middle of sphenoid bone (pituitary gland sits in it)
Pterygoid process
2 on each side; project downward; ("feet of bat"- disarticulated)
Ethmoid bone
Perpendicular plate
makes up part of nasal septum (superior part)
Crista galli
sticks up like fin
Cribriform plate
on each side of the crista galli with many holes
Ethmoid air cells
big holes, several, lateral to cribriform plate
Superior nasal concha
nasal cavity, bony projections
Middle nasal concha
nasal cavity, bony projections
Occipital bone
back of head
Lambdoidal suture
joint; looks like top of triangle; between occipital and parietal
Foramen magnum
big hole (inferior view); brain stem goes through
Occipital condyles
smooth projections; on each side of foramen magnum
Hypoglossal canals
underneath occipital condyles; passageway runs horizontally
Maxillary bones
2 bones make up upper jaw
Palatine process
front part of roof of mouth
Maxillary sinus
medial side; big open space
Alveolar processes
tooth sockets
Infraorbital foramen
below eye socket
Anterior palatine foramen
hole on roof of mouth
Palatine bone
behind palatine process of maxillary bones
Zygomatic bone
cheekbones
Lacrimal bone
medial part of the eye socket; next to maxillary bone
Nasal bone
medial
Vomer bone
below perpendicular plate of ethmoid, inferior part of nasal septum; "wall" in nasal cavity
Inferior nasal concha bone
