The idea that people learn behaviour partly by watching the people around them - learning by example.

Children learn behaviour through modelling:

  2. Vicarious learning - watching others and seeing how they are punished or rewarded

What was the procedure and finding of Bandura’s bobo doll experiment?

Procedure

  • A child watches an adult behave violently towards a life-size doll

  • The child is given their own doll and observed to see if they behave violently

Findings:

  • Children were more likely to be aggressive if they had seen an adult do so

  • Watching in real-life or on TV had the same impact - the children were more aggressive

  • The aggression rates were lower if the child saw the model being punished after beating the doll.
