Pre-referral Process
Purpose: To ensure that students without disabilities are not needlessly referred for special education when minor adjustments can correct the situation.
Teacher’s Role: Collects data and the teacher/ team decides if the student needs to begin the referral process.
Referral
Purpose: Team dives deeper into the student’s difficulties. Referring the student to special education.
Teacher Roles: Makes a referral to the team and is part of the team
Evaluation
Purpose: Gather information to determine the student has a disability
Teacher’s Role: Limited role because they can’t provide the evaluation. Might be asked to fill out a ratings form or gather more data.
Eligibility
Purpose: Team meets to look at the evaluation and determine if the student meets the criteria for Special Education
Teacher’s role: Part of the IEP team
IEP Development
Purpose: Create the IEP and outline what services the students will need
Teacher’s Role: Part of the team, and decides what the student will need to succeed from the IEP
IEP Implementation
Purpose: Services for the student begin
Teacher’s Role: Implement the IEP
IEP Annual Review
Purpose: IEP team meets to ensure student is making process and update plan if needed
Teacher’s Role: Provide data, input and is on the team
Re-Evaluation
Purpose: Evaluation every 3 years to see if the student still qualifies for special education services and update the student’s educational needs.
Teacher Role: Provide Information, sharing experiences in meeting
