Collective Bargaining
The process by which union and management representatives negotiate the terms of employment and working conditions.
Union Density Rate
The percentage of employees who are union members in a given area or industry.
Craft Union
A union formed by skilled specialists in a particular craft or trade, such as electricians or carpenters.
Industrial Union
A union that represents all workers in a particular industry, regardless of their skill level.
Certification Process
The formal process by which a union is recognized by the Labour Relations Board as the bargaining agent for employees.
Grievance
A complaint by an employee or union regarding the interpretation or application of the terms of a contract.
Arbitration
The process in which an independent third party makes a binding decision to resolve a dispute.
Mediation
A method of conflict resolution involving a neutral third party who facilitates discussion but does not impose a decision.
Lockout
A work stoppage initiated by the employer during a labor dispute, preventing employees from working.
Workplace Violence
Any act where an employee is abused, threatened, intimidated, or assaulted in the workplace.
Closed Shop
A workplace where all new hires must be union members, and hiring is done through the union.
Picketing
A form of protest in which workers walk around outside a workplace carrying signs and communicating their grievances to the public.
Wildcat Strike
An unauthorized strike that occurs without the approval of the union while a labor contract is still in effect.
Conciliation
The process of involving government services to help resolve a negotiation impasse between union and management.
Back to Work Legislation
Legislation that dictates workers return to work during a strike for the sake of public order.
Union Shop
A workplace where any employee can be hired, but must join the union within a certain period.
Agency Shop
An arrangement where employees are not required to join a union but must pay union dues.
Ethics in Unions
Concerns regarding the balance of power unions hold, their political involvement, and the legitimacy of their claims on improving working conditions.
Employee Grievance Committee
A group that represents both employees and management in resolving contract violations and disputes.
Strike
A collective refusal by workers to perform their jobs to express dissatisfaction with working conditions.
