Property of a substance
characteristic that’s typical and doesn’t change, allows us to recognize substance
Physical properties
properties you can observe without changing the substance to a new substance; appearance, color, smell, opacity, hardness, density, viscocity, melting/boiling point, magnetic attractions
Mixture and pure substance
a mixture consists of 2 or more substances and pure substance of only 1 substance
Chemical properties
describes a substance’s ability to undergo a chemical change and form a new substance; heat of combustion, flammability, reactivity to water, pH, radioactivity
Physical quantities
properties that can be measured written as a number with a unit
Why are mass, temperature, and volume not properties?
They can change
density
a measure how much matter is packed into a given area
Density formula
density=mass/volume
Density formula in symbols
p=m/v
What is 1mL equal to?
1 cm3
what units are used in density?
g/cm3, g/mL, kg/m3
How to calculate mass with density formula?
m=p x v
How to calculate volume with density formula?
v = m/p
