DSM-5 categories of depression

Classified as a mood (affective) disorder.

Characterised by changes to the mood.

Several types of depression which vary in terms of duration or stage of onset e.g. age, season or menstrual cycle

Categories of depression:

ØMajor depressive disorder- severe but often short term

ØPersistent depressive disorder- long-term of recurring depression

ØDisruptive mood dysregulation disorder- childhood temper tantrums

ØPremenstrual dysphoric disorder- disruption to mood prior to and/or during menstruation
