AEIOUTRIPS
A mnemonic used to identify causes of an altered level of consciousness, including Acidosis, Electrolytes, Insulin, Overdose, Uremia, Trauma, Respiratory, Infection, Poison, and Seizure.
Acidosis
A condition contributing to altered LOC that includes types such as Diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperchloremic acidosis, lactic acidosis, and respiratory acidosis.
Uremia
An altered LOC cause associated with medical conditions like congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and urinary obstruction.
Encephalopathy
A brain-related condition that can be Chronic traumatic, Hashimoto's, mitochondrial, or Wernicke's, leading to altered consciousness.
Opiate
A division of narcotics that includes naturally derived substances such as heroin, morphine, and codeine.
Opioid
A division of narcotics that includes synthetic or semi-synthetic substances such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl, and methadone.
Narcotic Overdose Findings
A clinical triad characterized by respiratory depression, pinpoint pupils, and a decreased level of consciousness ranging from confused to unresponsive.
Narcotic Reversal Protocol (EMR)
Management involving IM doses starting at 0.4mg, followed by a second dose of 0.4mg, a third of 0.8mg, and a fourth of 2mg every 3minutes as required.
Palliative patient
A patient with a terminal illness at an advanced stage of disease with an unfavourable prognosis or no known cure.
MOST
An acronym for Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment, which provides clinical designations for end-of-life care and resuscitation status.
Status Epilepticus
A life-threatening medical emergency defined as a single seizure lasting more than 5minutes or two or more seizures within a 5-minute period without returning to consciousness.
Tonic-clonic
A generalized seizure type formerly known as a grand mal seizure.
Anaphylaxis
An unusual or exaggerated systemic allergic reaction that is a life-threatening emergency requiring ABC support and potentially an EpiPen.
IDDM
Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus.
Hypoglycemia
A diabetic emergency where blood glucose levels fall below the normal range of 4−8mmol/L, often resulting in diaphoresis, trembling, and confusion.
Kussmaul respirations
Rapid, deep breathing patterns often associated with hyperglycemia.
Bariatric patients
A special patient population that places more demand on respiratory and cardiac systems and may require specialized equipment like a bariatric tarp.
