Mechanical ventilation
A method to assist or replace spontaneous breathing using a machine.
Endotracheal tube (ETT)
The most common intubation route used in mechanical ventilation.
Positive pressure ventilation
A ventilation method where air is pushed into the lungs.
Volume control settings
A ventilator setting that delivers a preset amount of air with each breath.
Pressure support
A mode of ventilation that provides assist based on the patient's effort.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)
A common complication of mechanical ventilation characterized by pneumonia occurring in patients on ventilators.
High pressure alarm
An alarm indicating increased airway pressure due to various causes such as secretions or kinks in tubing.
Low pressure alarm
An alarm indicating a disconnection, air leak, or displacement of the endotracheal tube.
Rescue breathing
A method of providing artificial ventilation in emergency situations using an Ambu-bag.
ABCDEF bundle
A set of practices aimed at ICU liberation, reducing mortality, delirium, and the use of restraints.
