Application Software
A program that performs a useful task for the user, such as productivity, entertainment, and education software.
Word Processing Software
Application that is used to create, edit, and format text documents.
Spreadsheet Software
Application that creates electronic worksheets composed of rows and columns; used for mathematical applications.
Cell
Intersection of a row and column in a spreadsheet, containing text, numbers, or formulas.
Formula
A calculation in a spreadsheet that usually starts with an '=', such as =SUM(A2:A6).
Presentation Software
Application used to create electronic presentations, such as a set of slides.
Database Software
Application used to create and manage a database, organizing information for fast retrieval.
Field (Database)
A single piece of information in an entry in a database table, such as a name or phone number.
Record (Database)
One complete entry in a database table, composed of individual fields.
Personal Information Manager (PIM) Software
Application used to manage e-mail, calendar, and tasks.
Accounting Software
Application used to track business finances and generate reports and graphs.
Document Management System (DMS)
Enables a company to save, share, search, and audit electronic documents throughout their life cycle.
Project Management Software
Application designed to help plan and complete projects, keep within budget, and stay on schedule.
Customer Relations Management (CRM) System
System for maintaining customer information and connections, tracking interactions with customers.
System Requirements
Minimum hardware and software specifications required to run an application.
EULA (End-User License Agreement)
The agreement between the user and the software publisher outlining usage rights.
Retail Software
User pays a fee to use the software; grants a proprietary software license.
Open Source Software
License grants ownership of the software to the end user, with source code available for modification.
Subscription Software
Access to software for a monthly or yearly fee, with updates included.
Freeware
Software that can be used at no cost for an unlimited period of time.
Web-Based Applications (Web Apps)
Applications that run in web browsers; no installation needed on user's computer.
Cloud Computing
Takes processing and storage off your hardware and puts it in the cloud (Internet servers).
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
Company uses provider’s Internet servers instead of maintaining their own for reduced costs.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Delivery of applications over the Internet, synonymous with web applications.
Patch (hotfix)
Addresses an individual problem (bug) in software when discovered.
Service Pack
Larger, planned update that addresses multiple problems or adds features.
