Epithelial Tissue
Tissue that covers and lines body structures.
Squamous Epithelial Cells
Flattened cells where a few cells cover large areas.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Tissue found in blood vessel linings (endothelia), capillaries, serous membranes of the digestive tract, lung alveoli, and parts of the nephron loop.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Tissue found in mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, rectum, vagina, and the skin surface.
Cuboidal Epithelial Cells
Intermediate cell shape that is roughly cubic.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Tissue found in the thyroid gland and parts of kidney tubules.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Tissue found in the ducts of sweat glands.
Columnar Epithelial Cells
Tall, narrow cells that allow many cells to occupy a small surface area.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Tissue found in the intestinal lining, stomach lining, and kidney collecting ducts.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Tissue found in the ducts of salivary glands, the urethra, and mammary glands.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Tissue found in the lining of nasal sinuses and the bronchial lining.
Connective Tissue
Tissue that provides support and connects body structures.
Loose Fibrous Connective Tissue
Tissue characterized by much matrix, few cells, and fibers.
Areolar Connective Tissue
A type of loose fibrous tissue found in subcutaneous skin layers (hypodermis).
Adipose Connective Tissue
A type of loose fibrous tissue found in subcutaneous skin layers (hypodermis).
Reticular Connective Tissue
A type of loose fibrous tissue found in the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow.
Dense Fibers Connective Tissue
Tissue where fibers are closely packed with little matrix.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Tissue found in tendons, ligaments, and aponeuroses (tendon sheets).
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Tissue found in the periosteum, perichondrium (coverings of bones and cartilage), nerve sheaths, and portions of the dermis.
Elastic Connective Tissue
Tissue found in blood vessel walls and elastic ligaments of the spinal column.
Fluid Connective Tissue
Tissue featuring a fluid matrix, many cells, and few or no fibers present.
Blood
A fluid connective tissue consisting of plasma, leukocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, and proteins.
Lymph
A fluid connective tissue consisting of interstitial fluid, leukocytes, and chylomicrons (lipids from intestinal absorption).
Bone Tissue
Tissue containing osteocytes with a matrix mostly comprised of mineral salts.
Compact Bone
Bone tissue found in the shafts of long bones.
Spongy Bone
Bone tissue found in the ends of long bones.
Cartilage
Tissue containing chondrocytes with a matrix composed of a gel of derivative carbohydrates.
Elastic Cartilage
Cartilage found in the ear pinna (flap) and the epiglottis.
Hyaline Cartilage
Cartilage found in laryngeal supports, bronchial rings, and sternum joints.
Fibrocartilage
Cartilage found in intervertebral disks and pads in some synovial joints.
Muscle Tissue
Elongated cells able to undergo contraction.
Skeletal Muscle
Muscle tissue found in appendicular muscles.
Smooth Muscle
Muscle tissue found in blood vessel walls and digestive tract walls.
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle tissue found in the heart.
Nervous Tissue
Consists of neurons and support cells of the nervous system.
Neurons
Electrically stimulated cells that carry signals.
Motor Neurons
Neurons that carry signals to muscles.
Sensory Neurons
Neurons that carry signals from sensory organs.
Interneuron
Central nervous system components that carry signals.
Glial Cells
Support cells of the nervous system, including neurolemmocytes and astrocytes.
