top/first layer *stratified squamous mostly dead

Dermis

made of loose & dead tissue *hair follicles

Subcutaneous or Hypodermis

deep to the dermis made mostly of adipose tissue, anchors skin

Stratum Corrneum

-Shingle-like dead cells -Found: everywhere; outer layer

Stratum Basale

(close to the dermis) -cells undergoing mitosis -lies next to the dermis think Italian food

Melanocytes

produced melanin pigment -mostly in the stratum basale -amount of melanin produced depends on genetic & exposure to sunlight
