Bipolar 1
Must have a manic episode and last for at least one week, can be preceded by a Hypermanic episode or a Major Depressive Episode
A: Must have met at least one manic episode
B: manic episode is not related to another schizophrenia spectrum disorder
Manic Episode
-A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day (or any duration if hospitalization is necessary).
-B: DIGFAST -must have 4 or more for one week, nearly every day

- C: Mood Disorder is sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or to necessitate hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or there are psychotic features.

Hypermanic Episode
-A: A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable
mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy, lasting at
least 4 consecutive days and present most of the day, nearly every day.
- B: DIGFAST -must have 4 or more for 4 days

-C: The episode is associated with an unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the individual when not symptomatic.

features, the episode is, by definition, manic.
-F: Not Due to SUD

-A: 5 or more symptoms that are present for the same two-week period. At least one has been a depressed mood or loss of interest

Course of Bipolar 1
Not likely to recover without treatment
Bipolar 2
-A: Must have a Hypermanic Episode and a Major Depressive Episode (current or past)
-B: Never had a manic episode
-C: Hypermanic Episode and major depressive episode are not better explained by a schizoprenia spectrum disorder
-D: The symptoms of depression or the unpredictability caused by frequent alternation between periods of depression and hypomania cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
