The chapel also served as a burial site for Charlemagne and thus becane a najor pilgrimage site due to this
Its octagonal design was inspired by Byzantine architecture, particularly the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna

This are is important as it is belived to be the burial place of St. James
This city is also the destination of the Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage route leading to the cathedral built over the apostle’s tomb
Much like muslims who make it a goal to visit Mecca, christians at this time would often make this pilgrimage a goal to travel. They would make wills for themselves as often time sthey would not return home
Along this pilgrimage route, the travels had the chance to obtain pilgrimage padges catered to the location of the churches and cathedrals along the pilgrimage route
The city's cathedral is of Romanesque architecture, though it also features elements from later styles (like Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical)
