What is phlebotomy?
The act of drawing or removing blood from a blood vessel to obtain a sample for analysis
What is venipuncture?
The act of puncturing a vein to collect venous blood for medical purposes, transfusions, donations, and research
What is bloodletting?
Puncture of a vein to drain fluids that were believed to be infected from a person’s body
What is cupping?
Placing hot stoneware cups on the skin to draw a person’s blood to the surface
What is the evacuated tube system (ETS)?
Withdrawal of a predetermined blood using a needle, an adapter, and a color coded vacuum sealed tube
Why are some reasons blood is collected today?
Diagnostic purposes to aid in confirming or ruling out a medical condition
Monitoring drug levels
Storing samples for donation or transfusion
Removing excessive amounts of blood
